INTRODUCTION
This website is a continuation of the three print bibliographies
on library services for distance learning:
- Slade, Alexander L. and Marie A. Kascus. Library Services
for Open and Distance Learning: The Third Annotated Bibliography.
Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 2000. ISBN
1-56308-745-6.
- Slade, Alexander L. and Marie A. Kascus. Library Services
for Off-Campus and Distance Education: The Second Annotated
Bibliography. Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 1996. ISBN
1-56308-465-1.
- Latham, Sheila, Alexander L. Slade, and Carol Budnick.
Library Services for Off-Campus and Distance Education: An
Annotated Bibliography. Ottawa: Canadian Library Association;
London: Library Association Publishing Limited; Chicago: American
Library Association, 1991. ISBN 0-88802-257-3.
Due to time and workload considerations, there will be no further
bibliographies in print form by these authors. However, this website
will be maintained to provide access to publications and other
resources that have appeared since the third bibliography was
published.
Citations have been grouped into chapters similar to those used in
the third bibliography. Each citation has an abstract. However,
access to the citations is more limited than in the previous works.
There are no institution and geographic indexes and the subject index
is very selective. To partially compensate for this, many references
appear in two or more chapters for broader access.
To further facilitate access, all works containing descriptions of
services or initiatives at specific institutions have been included in Chapter 11 (Library Case
Studies). This chapter can serve as both a country index and an
institutional index. Chapters 9 (Library
Surveys) and 10 (User Studies) are also
organized by country and provide geographical access to the various
research studies.
The inclusion criteria for new material is narrower than before.
In the previous bibliographies, some general material was included on
virtual libraries, virtual reference services, electronic reserves,
web-based instruction, and remote access to electronic resources.
Most citations on this website pertain specifically to library
services for distance learning.
The site will be updated as new references become available. Users
are invited to check back periodically to see what new citations have
been added.
